Mr Pothole Blows Holes Through the Department of Transport

http://www.Mr-Pothole.co.uk has today stepped up his personal war against the 'pothole menace', by arriving at the Department for Transport in a "ROAD LEGAL TANK". The campaigning crusader was there to pass on recommendations from the National Pothole Meeting he chaired, of how to better manage the UK road network and start putting an end to their decay.  He also issued them with a representation of a notice under Section 56 of the Highways Act 1980, for failure to maintain highways with public money.

Section 56 will state, We the undersigned request the following:

1) The government invest more in the current infrastructure as well as new projects;

2) The Department of Transport ring fences any funding for roads to the local councils and ensures that it used for that purpose;

3) Expenditure on road repair and maintenance is increased to a level more appropriate for an asset that is worth in the order of £750 billion to the country. Extra funding would save money in the long run as the "patch and mend" mentality of road maintenance cannot go on much more. 

As well as improving the condition of our roads and making them safer, the above would do the following:

1) Stop people injuring themselves and damaging their vehicles;

2) Avoid drivers having to drive like a downhill slalom skier avoiding potholes;

3) Create jobs and apprenticeships for young people currently out of work; 

4) Put money into the economy which would improve financial performance that a number of leading experts believe the UK government should do now to assist the country's recovery.

What started as one man verses his local council has fast become a nationally supported campaign. Mr Pothole's aim is to get a spending review and proper investment, in an asset with an estimated worth in the region of £750billion. As roads continue to deteriorate, the highways authorities and councils backlog continues to grow.

When asked about why he had chosen to arrive in a tank, Mr Pothole said "Without a change in how our roads are maintained, tracked vehicles could be necessary just to get around in the future." He went on to say "The gun represents that I plan to blow holes in the lies, damn lies and statistics that, we, the public, are being fed."

A standing protest, outside the Department for Transport's Horseferry Road address, followed Mr Pothole's arrival. There were attendees from the public as well as support from groups such as the HS2 Action Alliance.
