STORY SUMMARY:
Health groups and individual consumers from around the nation are launching a campaign called, "Mind the Store," to get the nation's top 10 retailers to remove products containing toxic chemicals from their store shelves and make a commitment to look after the health of their customers. Many of these products have been linked to cancer, asthma, hormone disruption, developmental disabilities, and other health problems.
Wal-Mart, Kroger's, Safeway, Home Depot, and Best Buy are all selling products that contain toxics that the newly created "Mind the Store" campaign calls the "Hazardous Hundred." The chemicals appear in a range of products, from cosmetics and hygiene products, to soaps, flooring and furniture.
The groups have issued letters to the retailers, outlining a plan to purge the hazardous hundred from store shelves. Among the groups backing the initiative is "Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families."
