Mundus Bishop Connects Children with the Great Outdoors
Denver landscape architecture firm designs Denver Botanic Garden's Mordecai Children's Garden
DENVER, Nov. 9, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Mundus Bishop unveiled its newest design at the Denver Botanic Gardens – Mordecai Children's Garden last month. The garden is a kid-friendly place where children and families connect with the outdoors—learning through play, discovery, experimentation and observation. It is a kid-scale garden where children can experience the outdoors through all five senses: touch, sight, sound, smell and taste. The Mordecai Children's Garden is one of seven gardens that Mundus Bishop has designed for the Denver Botanic Gardens since 2008.
"Our firm designs every space with the users in mind. When it came to creating a concept plan for the children's garden, we worked to design the perfect refuge where children can have first-hand experiences with plants and all the other wonders of the natural world," said Tina Bishop, ASLA, principal of Mundus Bishop.
Mundus Bishop designed the Mordecai Children's Garden with the vision of bringing environmental education and environmental responsibility to kids and their parents. Each of the garden rooms includes sustainable design measures. The Rooftop Alpine Garden is built as a green roof atop a parking structure, and shows visitors how sustainable design and building practices positively impact underdeveloped resources and space. Pipsqueak Pond doubles as an important element in the site's storm water system, storing and cleaning site run-off.
One of the many highlights of the garden is Sagebrush Stage — the child-size amphitheater that rivals Red Rocks – and the Way Up High Trail where parents and children can explore caves, rocks, wind tunnels and tops of trees. Mordecai Children's Garden is a haven for kids of all ages to experience Colorado's ecosystems close to home — exploring nature trails, discovering caves and tunnels, and connecting with nature.
