NEW YORK, April 4, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Music industry veterans Michael Caplan and Vic Steffens have formed the New Haven, Connecticut-based Elm City Records. This new label venture has secured a distribution deal from EMI Label Services. Elm City's inaugural release—the highly-anticipated debut 'Omerta' from heavy metal supergroup Adrenaline Mob—debuted at 62 on the Billboard 200 last week. The label will be announcing several new signings in the coming months.
Elm City Music is a full service music and entertainment company with worldwide distribution, with EMI Label Services handling all distribution duties for North America. The label combines a nurturing, artist-friendly environment with muscular major-label reach.
Caplan began his career working for Morris Levy and the Strawberries Records chain before moving on to Polygram. He then started a successful 25-year run as an A&R man for Sony Music. It was at Sony where Caplan signed such acts as the Allman Brothers Band, Tower Of Power, Living Colour, Keb' Mo', Ginuwine, G. Love and Special Sauce, Matisyahu, Los Lonely Boys and many others, showing a knack for finding hits in diverse musical genres. He now has returned home to New Haven to form Elm City Music with Steffens.
"Vic and I have talked for over 25 years about teaming up," Caplan says. "Horizon Studios is Connecticut's premiere studio, and when I decided to move home, I knew that was the right creative environment for me to roost. With the fabulous support from Dominic Pandiscia and Mike Harris at EMI Label Services, I feel confident that our artists will receive all the tender loving care they deserve. I hope that Elm City Music will be the crowning achievement of my career."
Vic Steffens has been a producer and engineer with a long list of credits for over 30 years. He originally was the drummer in New Haven's legendary Scratch Band also appearing as a session player with the Rolling Stones, Donovan and Ben E. King. He started his career as an engineer/producer at Paul Leka's Connecticut Recording and is currently the owner and operator of Horizon Recording and the Horizon Music Group in West Haven, CT. Steffens has recorded and produced a diverse group of projects including Boston icons The Neighborhoods, Lita Ford, The Blues Brothers, Matt "Guitar" Murphy, and Bobby Brown.
Elm City's first signing, Adrenaline Mob, features former Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy who has sold over 10 million CDs/DVDs throughout his 25 year career and sold out venues all over the world, Symphony X singer Russell Allen, and guitar wunderkind Mike Orlando. Adrenaline Mob just added bassist John Moyer from the multi-platinum band Disturbed to the lineup.
