Mylan Announces $1 Million Gift to The Pittsburgh Promise Scholarship Fund
Pledge Supports Campaign's Goal to Raise Additional $90 Million for Scholarships over Next Two Years
PITTSBURGH, April 22, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Mylan Inc. (Nasdaq: MYL) today announced that it has contributed $1 million to The Pittsburgh Promise Scholarship Fund, a scholarship program for Pittsburgh Public School students that advocates for improving the quality of education and increasing the preparedness and diversity of the region's workforce. The donation will help The Pittsburgh Promise to complete phase II of their $250 million fundraising campaign nearly three years ahead of the fund's original 2018 target.
Mylan Executive Chairman Robert J. Coury said, "Mylan has and will continue to play an active role in Pittsburgh, as we believe strongly in the importance of giving back to our community. Pittsburgh has long served as an important hub to Mylan and we anticipate it will continue to play a key role in our business for many years, as we look forward the opening of our new Global Center later this year.
"With this donation to The Pittsburgh Promise, we are proud to invest in the future of the region's children through enhanced educational opportunities and believe this contribution will only further build on the strength of our community and its people in the future."
Mylan CEO Heather Bresch commented, "Our pledge supports the hope that students in our own backyard receive an education after high school and helps break down the financial barriers that could keep them from making their dreams come true. We are pleased to support one of the country's leading scholarship programs that advances public education reform, while preparing our young people for jobs in science and business."
Pittsburgh Promise scholars have enrolled in 91 different post-secondary public and private colleges and universities, career training companies, and vocational and trade programs throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Pittsburgh has the largest Promise program in the United States. Reaching the program's financial goals sooner than previously expected will help to ensure that the Promise can continue making progress on its mission to advance the lives of young people for many years to come.
Since the Pittsburgh Promise was launched in 2007, $160 million has been raised in gifts and pledges from more than 100 corporations and foundations, and more than 2,000 individual donors. The Promise has provided $32 million in scholarships to 3,800 graduates from the Pittsburgh Public Schools classes of 2008 – 2012.
