MyNews.is Delivers Personalization That Boosts Discovery
SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 15, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Personalized news reader apps and sites have been popping up a lot lately - Zite, Summify, Trove, News.me, News360, Evri and AOL Editions are prime examples. An extensive market has evolved for people to gather information on-demand and efficiently, without having to filter through thousands of news sources and stories themselves. The push has been to personalize and customize the news so users, on-the-go and too busy to flip through several news sites every day, can get the news that matters to them quickly and easily.
Now MyNews.is (www.mynews.is) joins this space, but with a different approach. On MyNews.is, a user can select how many news articles the user wants from a pre-selected list of categories and sources. The user can give every category and source a rating from one to five so it can fine-tune interests. By connecting with Facebook, MyNews.is will pre-select some categories and sources a user might like, so the user doesn't have to. The sign-up process is a little tedious, but is forcing you to not only select the 2-3 main categories you want to follow, but also giving a (lower) rating for categories you are interested in a little, meaning that you want to know when something important happens in that field but not be flooded with every piece of unimportant news about that topic.
Here is where the magic on MyNews.is happens: if something important or interesting is published in the categories, it will show on top of your main news stream. And if the algorithm figures out that you might be interested (based on your personal usage pattern and that of similar users) in a story that actually is not in the categories you selected, it might also show up, introducing an interesting serendipity effect lacking in other personalization sites. You would have to use MyNews.is a little while before this effect occurs, since the algorithm needs first to learn your reading patterns, but then it is very amazing.
In the near future MyNews.is is planning to also filter your Twitter and Facebook stream.
