NACME and Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson Holding Joint Press Conference
STEM Education Legislation to Be Introduced
WASHINGTON, April 17, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering, Inc. (NACME) and Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) will be holding a joint press conference to introduce the "Broadening Participation in STEM Education Act," as well as to re-release the NACME Data Book, on Tues. April 24, 2012 from 10:00-11:30 a.m., in Washington, D.C.
The goal of the bill introduced by Rep. Johnson is to help increase the number of students from underrepresented minority groups earning degrees in STEM fields at the undergraduate level, and to expand the number of faculty members from underrepresented minority groups at colleges and universities.
"The legislation being introduced by Congresswoman Johnson echoes what has been at the very core of what NACME does, and has done for decades," said Dr. Irving Pressley McPhail, NACME President and CEO. "We applaud her for introducing this legislation, and I urge everyone who is affiliated with NACME to support this legislation in every way possible."
The press conference is being held to mark the rerelease of the NACME Data Book. The Data Book is a comprehensive collection of the most up-to-date statistics on underrepresented minorities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields of study and the workforce.
"With major demographic changes in the U.S., the significant underrepresentation of minorities, including women, in the STEM disciplines is becoming an urgent problem for our country," said Dr. McPhail. "The first step to recognizing the gravity of the situation is to understand the current environment– for which this Data Book is critical."
