NASA Federal Credit Union Awards Scholarships to Area Students

UPPER MARLBORO, Md., May 28, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- At the conclusion of its 2014 Mitchell-Beall-Rosen Memorial Scholarship Contest, NASA Federal Credit Union awarded scholarships—ranging from $1,000 to the top prize of $7,000—to eight high school seniors. The annual program rewards the writing talent and academic endeavors of young Credit Union members who are working toward four-year or two-year undergraduate degrees or vocational studies.

"NASA FCU's core purpose is to empower people to achieve a brighter financial future. We're delighted to be able to do that for our young members by helping them further their educational pursuits through the Mitchell-Beall-Rosen Memorial Scholarship," said Frank Peñaranda, Chairman of NASA FCU's Scholarship Committee and Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors. "The Scholarship is now in its 31^st year and has provided more than $400,000 to over 150 recipients. As in years past, this year's winners are very promising young adults, and we are pleased to help support them as they embark on their life's goals." 

The following outstanding seniors were recipients of this year's Scholarship awards:

• Keenan Bishop of Stockton, Maryland—Graduated from Snow Hill High School; will attend Towson University to study exercise physiology and, thereafter, will pursue a career in sports rehabilitation.
• Clarisse Callahan of Silver Spring, Maryland—Attended Montgomery Blair High School and is entering DePaul University to study film production, focusing specifically on film editing and screenwriting.  
• Brian Duffy of Laurel, Maryland—Attended Atholton High School and plans to pursue a career in music production after attending Elon University and majoring in audio engineering.
• Daniel Comberiate of Clarksville, Maryland—Graduated from Mount Saint Joseph High School and plans to work in technology after studying electrical engineering at the University of Maryland.
• Rachel Coe of White Plains, Maryland—Graduated from Bishop Ireton High School and plans to pursue entrepreneurial endeavors after attending Florida State University and majoring in business.
• Marvin Cosare of Germantown, Maryland—Attended Seneca Valley High School and will major in electrical engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to pursue a career in technology.
• Matthew Jackson of Woodstock, Maryland—Attended Marriotts Ridge High School and will study computer science at UMBC to pursue a career as a software or hardware engineer.
• Matthew Kasa of Bowie, Maryland—Graduated from Bowie High School and will attend Anne Arundel Community College to study education and, thereafter, pursue a career as a high school teacher.

The Scholarship Program was established in 1983 in memory of Wilfred Mitchell and then renamed in 1991 to also honor Donald Beall. Both men are former NASA Federal Credit Union officials who were strong advocates of the education of our youth. In 2010, the name of the Scholarship Program was again changed, to the Mitchell-Beall-Rosen Memorial Scholarship Program, in honor of Eugene D. Rosen, who was instrumental in launching the program and served as its Chairman for 27 years. Mitchell, Beall and Rosen are fondly remembered for their commitment to the Credit Union movement and especially for their efforts to help young people succeed.
