National Awards Recognize Coleman A. Young Municipal Center, the City of Detroit and County of Wayne Municipal Headquarters
DETROIT, March 13, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The Detroit-Wayne Joint Building Authority (DWJBA), managing agent for the circa 1955, 747,000 square foot Coleman A. Young Municipal Center in Detroit, Michigan, continues to receive national recognition for its facilities and operational management and building of the year designation. The Detroit-Wayne Joint Building Authority is the State of Michigan's oldest public authority.
The twenty story municipal landmark is home to the city of Detroit's Executive and Legislative branches of government, the Clerk offices for the City of Detroit and Wayne County as well as the Third Judicial Circuit Court and Wayne County Probate Court. An average of four thousand people each day and one million annually visit the municipal center landmark anchoring the hub of the city's Civic Center.
In 2013, the DWJBA received national awards for historic preservation and energy and operational efficiencies of the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center (CAYMC). The recognitions are The Outstanding Building of the Year (TOBY) Award presented by the Building Owners & Managers Association (BOMA) for the third year and the eighth consecutive U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) prestigious ENERGY STAR designation.
The TOBY Award
The Building Owners & Managers Association (BOMA) announced that The Outstanding Building of the Year (TOBY) Award in the category of a Historic Building was presented for recognition in the Historical Building category. This is BOMA's third award to CAYMC with the prior two years being in the Government Building category.
The historical rating was based on the building's location in the city's civic center, building design, architectural preservation and being the hub for political and social activities accessible to the public.
8th EPA Energy Star Designation
For the eighth consecutive year, the DWJBA has earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) prestigious ENERGY STAR, consistently ranking in the ninety-percentile of buildings within its category. The ENERGY STAR is the national symbol for high standards of achievement in energy performance of buildings throughout the United States.
"The Authority has improved energy performance by managing and optimizing energy use across the entire facility and making cost-effective improvements to the municipal center. The DWJBA strives for excellence providing a user-friendly, welcoming and efficient environment for those who work in and visit the building," said Patricia Cole, CAYMC Commission Chair.
Since participating in the ENERGY STAR initiative, the DWJBA has achieved a cost avoidance of approximately $12 million dollars and reduced annual energy costs from $3.3 million to $1 million, a 70% reduction while significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
