National Catholic Reporter Welcomes James Howell as Chief Advancement Officer
KANSAS CITY, Mo., March 3, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Catholic Reporter (NCR) announced the appointment of James Howell as its new Chief Advancement Officer, effective March 3, 2025. Howell brings a wealth of experience in Catholic fundraising and nonprofit development, most recently serving as executive director of the Bethlehem University Foundation.
Howell's career spans key leadership roles in development at Catholic Charities, both nationally and in Oregon, as well as at Boys Town in Omaha and New Orleans, and the YWCA's national fundraising team. His connection to Bethlehem University Foundation runs deep—before leading the organization, he directed the university's successful multi-million dollar capital campaign and was later called back to serve as executive director.
Bethlehem University, located in the Holy Land and overseen by the Vatican and the De La Salle Brothers, serves a 100% Palestinian student body, with 80% of students being Muslim and 80% female. Howell began his most recent tenure with the foundation while in Bethlehem on the West Bank, just two days before the October 7th attack. His firsthand understanding of the challenges facing Catholic institutions in complex global settings will bring a unique perspective to NCR's advancement efforts.
Based in Baltimore, Howell will lead NCR's highly successful development team, ensuring the continued growth and sustainability of the nation's leading independent Catholic news organization.
"James's passion for NCR's mission and his deep expertise in Catholic philanthropy make him the perfect fit to help drive our success forward," said NCR CEO Joe Ferullo. "We look forward to welcoming him onboard, especially at such a pivotal moment in the history of our church and our nation."
