National Center for Families Learning Opens Registration for 2015 Families Learning Summit
Annual summit brings leaders in intergenerational learning to Houston, welcomes astronaut Leland Melvin as keynote speaker
LOUISVILLE, Ky., Sept. 8, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The National Center for Families Learning (NCFL) invites proponents of learning at every age to register and attend the annual Families Learning Summit at the Hyatt Regency Houston from March 16-18, 2015. Join the nation's top experts on two-generational learning, spanning early childhood education to adult literacy issues, and register today using NCFL's secure online form.
Further demonstrating NCFL's connection and commitment to the Houston community at-large, the Summit will feature an opening keynote from Neil Bush, chairman of the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation. In this role, he is able to act on his passion to promote literacy as a fundamental right and a critical skill for a successful life. Mr. Bush is also chairman of the Points of Light Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to volunteerism and community service.
This enriching session is just one of the many ways the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation will enhance the Summit this year as a strategic partner, standing shoulder to shoulder with NCFL in a shared mission to foster a love of learning among students of all ages and backgrounds.
Additional Speakers
Leland Melvin (@Astro_Flow) has traveled to space and he's graced the NFL gridiron, and on March 17, he will anchor the 2015 Families Learning Summit. Melvin will share his story of perseverance with attendees while also announcing the 2015 Toyota Family Teacher of the Year. Later that evening, he will lead a live #WonderChat with @wonderopolis and NCFL's nationwide audience.
- Melvin currently co-chairs the White House STEM Council and recently retired as NASA's Deputy Director of Education.
- As an astronaut, he helped build the International Space Station and traveled twice on the shuttle Atlantis.
- He is the only person drafted by the NFL (Detroit Lions) to have traveled in space, and his jersey hangs in the NFL Hall of Fame.
Renowned reading teacher and The Book Whisperer author Donalyn Miller (@donalynbooks) will speak on the topic of inspiring young reluctant readers.
- The session will include tips from her newest book, Reading in the Wild, and how to use engaging tools like Wonderopolis.org to inspire a love of learning and reading among even the most hesitant.
Partners
In addition to working closely with the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation this year, NCFL is partnering with the Literacy Funders Network, Literacy Powerline, the Goodling Institute for Research in Family Literacy, Urban Libraries Council and the Houston Public Library to bring the very best in literacy and education to Summit attendees.
Registration
NCFL believes that access to education should never be dictated by financial ability, and the same goes for attending the Families Learning Summit. Registration fees are the same as last year – $475 for the three-day Summit – and the cost of sleeping rooms at the Hyatt Regency Houston is also standard – $184 across the board – to make three days of learning affordable.
