National Hospice Foundation Honors the Late Senator Edward Kennedy with the Healthcare Architect Award
ALEXANDRIA, Va., April 28 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- During the National Hospice Foundation's sixth annual gala, The Founders Ball, held on April 23, NHF awarded the late Senator Edward Kennedy with the NHF Healthcare Architect Award. It was presented by Gretchen Brown, NHF trustee and chair of NHPCO and received on behalf of the Kennedy family by Tom Koutsoumpas, a Kennedy family friend and NHF trustee.
Kennedy was an early advocate for hospice, joining founding NHF chair Zachary Morfogen and others at one of the first meetings of the national organization introducing the hospice demonstration project in the early 1980s. This was the precursor to the Medicare Hospice Benefit, which today covers hospice care for hundreds of thousands of Americans each year.
In her remarks, Brown stated, "As we all know, the late Senator was tirelessly devoted to healthcare. 'It is a right, not a privilege,' he said every chance he had. His efforts on behalf of hospice enhanced awareness of our services and ensured the availability of affordable end-of-life care for all Americans. We are grateful for his leadership, his support, and his life of service."
NHF's Healthcare Architect Award recognizes individuals who have made a significant impact in the delivery and understandings of hospice and palliative care. Honorees have shaped programs, developed initiatives, and raised awareness, enhancing the provision of quality end-of-life care with greater access for all. It is through their daily mission that NHF's vision of a world filled with the best care humankind can offer will become a reality.
The National Hospice Foundation envisions a world where everyone facing serious illness, death, and grief will experience the best that humankind can offer. NHF supports the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization's quality and research initiatives; hospice/palliative care provider education activities; consumer engagement and caregiver services; and the FHSSA Impact Fund, www.nationalhospicefoundation.org.
