Nearly Three in Four Adults Use Online Coupons, Finds CouponCabin.com's National Coupon Month Survey
--Online Coupon Use Continues to Rise in Popularity--
WHITING, Ind., Aug. 31, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- In honor of National Coupon Month this September, CouponCabin.com is celebrating with new survey results on how people use those popular online codes and cut-outs of paper to save money. According to the survey, nearly three-quarters of online U.S. adults (74 percent) reported that they have used an online coupon or coupon code at least once, with 36 percent reporting that they use online coupons or coupon codes at least once a month. More than one-in-ten (11 percent) said they use an online coupon or coupon code at least once a week. The survey was conducted online nationwide by Harris Interactive on behalf of CouponCabin.com from July 14-18, 2011, among 2,554 U.S. adults age 18 and older.
The recession has forced folks to monitor their spending habits more carefully and using coupons continues to be a habit even as the economy has slightly improved. The categories that people who typically use coupons use them on:
- Food and wine: 49 percent
- Clothing: 39 percent
- Pet supplies: 28 percent
- Beauty supplies: 25 percent
- Books and magazines: 24 percent
"At CouponCabin.com, we've seen that no matter how much money you earn, there's simply no reason to pay full price since it's so easy to save money online," said Jackie Warrick, President and Chief Savings Officer at CouponCabin.com, which currently features offers for more than 3,500 retailers. "Though the economic climate has improved, people are still taking advantage of great deals all over the web. In fact, we've seen a 23 percent increase in savings year-over-year."
New data from CouponCabin indicates that people are using coupons with increased frequency. From January - August 2010, CouponCabin users saved $12.3 million. In 2011, users saved $15.1 million for the same time period.
In an open-ended question, U.S. adults were asked to share their best coupon gets. A few of the specific items they saved on include:
- $250 on a computer
- Free $52 photo book (only paid for shipping)
- 35% off a $1600 plasma TV and an $1800 sectional; total amount saved was more than $1,000
- $330 off a designer suit on sale
- 75% off video game downloads
- $20 off a textbook
- $400 off a two-for one airline ticket
- 10% off coupon kitchen cabinets; saved about $600
- $50 off workout gear
- $100 off an mp3 player
Warrick offers some easy advice for coupon seekers:
- Spend some time comparison-shopping to find the best deal on the product you're looking for – then use an online coupon to save even more.
- Never pay for shipping! Most retailers offer free shipping on orders of $50 or more.
- Don't be tempted by flash sales and daily deals. Make a budget and stick to it. Buy what you need, not what you want.
