never.no today announced a new feature for its flagship product, Interactivity Suite (IS), that enables content to be delivered to a tablet, mobile, or PC in sync with the action on the viewer's television screen.
Using the new Synchronized Companion App feature, broadcasters can easily develop distinctive, branded applications that push/pull relevant information or entertainment to and from the second screen. For example, a viewer about to watch the big game on TV might use the Synchronized Companion App to get details about favorite players pushed to his or her iPad(R) instantaneously as lineups are announced before kickoff.
Relevant background information on unscheduled game events, like scores and penalties, will be available on the iPad as they happen. Likewise, the viewers might use the application to express their opinion in real time about a call just made by the referee, and see real-time poll results displayed on TV.
"With Nielsen reporting that 60 percent of people surf the Web while watching TV, the Synchronized Companion App offers a huge advantage for broadcasters," said Lars Lauritzsen, never.no CEO. "Using the new feature, they can take over the second screen - a tablet, smartphone, or a PC - and claim the viewer's full attention. This is a significant opportunity for broadcasters, and we look forward to helping new and existing customers build creative, viewer-pleasing, and audience-building synchronized apps."
With Synchronized Companion App it is also possible to increase advertising airtime value through synchronized ad-support on the second screen. In time with a TV commercial, consumers will be able to gather further product and retailer information and even make their ultimate transaction from the iPad.
Powered by the never.no IS, Synchronized Companion App monitors frame-by-frame changes in broadcast programming or live production then uses the changes to trigger delivery of specified content to the second screen. Because of the IS' extensive integration capabilities and support for all major protocols, the framework provides an active return channel to the broadcaster. As a result, tablets, smartphones, and PCs become perfect peripherals for enabling participation TV, interactive content, and even remote control.
