New Colorado Social Enterprise Exchange to Launch at Nonprofit Workshop in March
DENVER, Feb. 21, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Social enterprise has reached new levels of interest among nonprofits and the foundations that fund them, and with good reason – helping nonprofits be more sustainable as they work to achieve their missions is a cause almost everyone can stand behind.
Next month, the Colorado Nonprofit Social Enterprise Exchange (The Exchange), in partnership with the Colorado Nonprofit Association (CNA), is hosting a workshop "Getting Started with Social Enterprise" to help Colorado nonprofits explore whether social enterprise or earned income strategies might be right for their organization.
Charities have been hit extraordinarily hard in the recession – total giving in America in 2011 was 11% below giving in 2007 (Giving USA) and nearly two-thirds of nonprofits reported an increase in demand for services in 2012 (Guidestar).
"Something must fill the gap," says Caryn Capriccioso, who along with partner Rick Zwetsch of Longmont-based interSector Partners, L3C and Julie Voyles of JVoyles Nonprofit Consulting – the team behind The Exchange – will co-present the workshop. "As the economy for nonprofits changes, they must look for more ways to generate sustainable, flexible revenue."
The workshop is a stand-alone introduction to social enterprise, and also serves as the first stage in the launch of The Exchange, a two-year capacity building program offering in-depth support to nonprofits seeking to design and launch social enterprises. Following the "Getting Started" workshop, nonprofits may choose to continue on to a full-day training where they will begin testing and developing their ideas, and then apply for a year-long cohort-based program to fully develop their social enterprises. The program culminates with a final pitch session to secure funding to launch and operate their ventures.
"Social enterprise is not the solution to all the trials and tribulations of nonprofit fundraising," says Julie Voyles. "But, it has not been fully explored, utilized and supported in Colorado and now is the time to do so."
Adds Londell Jackson, CNA director of education and programs: "This conversation will highlight an avenue for innovation which Colorado nonprofits can utilize to achieve the social change their communities desire."
The workshop is March 19 at the Colorado Collaborative for Nonprofits; $55 CNA members/$75 nonmembers. Learn more about The Exchange at http://www.intersectorl3c.com/co-socent-exchange.html or register for this session at www.coloradononprofits.org.
