New England Photographer to Debut New Photographic Prints
Interludes: New Photographs by Kathie Florsheim
FALL RIVER, Mass., Aug. 1, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The Grimshaw-Gudewicz Gallery is pleased to announce the world premier of a new exhibition of photographs by nationally acclaimed photographer Kathie Florsheim. The exhibition of more than 40 color prints will be on display at the Gallery on the campus of the Bristol Community College in Fall River, MA.
Interludes is a comprehensive exhibition of Kathie Florsheim's photographic focus on the light of Cape Cod. Over the past decade, the artist has been documenting the subtle shifts of light and space that resonate on the horizon where air and water meet. The unpopulated photographs are culled from thousands of exposures. Sunlight dances on ripples of water; clouds predict imminent storms; fog reveals as much as it obfuscates. Florsheim exposes the drama of these elusive changes spanning ten years and 40 seasons. Well-known for their quiet, meditative presence, they convey the calm stillness that is so easily lost in today's harried world.
The photographic prints on exhibit range from an intimate scale of 8 x 10 inches to mural size versions of 40 x 60 inches. While the artist adheres to the time honored tradition of capturing her images with film, she has nonetheless embraced cutting edge technology by presenting digital pigment prints for this international debut.
"Tone, tempo, shape, color and composition are interchangeable in the aural and visual arts," says Ms. Florsheim when asked about the title of the exhibition. "Interludes are passages between two moments. Every photograph is a present that references both past and future."
Kathie Florsheim earned an M.F.A. in Photography from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), where she studied with icons Aaron Siskind and Harry Callahan. Honors include a residency at the Atlantic Center for the Arts, a Visual Art Sea Grant award given by the University of Rhode Island, and the Hannum-Warner Travel Fellowship awarded by her alma mater, Mt. Holyoke College. Her professional honors also include a fellowship with the Institutes for Journalism and Natural Resources, and a CASE Media Fellowship awarded by the University of Maine. She is a Senior Fellow at the Coastal Institute, at the School of Oceanography, University of Rhode Island. Her photographs are in the permanent collections of the Fogg Museum at Harvard University, RISD Art Museum, The Museum of Art at Bates College, the Provincetown Art Association , Houston Museum of Fine Art, Center for Photography in Tucson, AZ, and the Newport Art Museum, as well as numerous private collections.
