WASHINGTON, June 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Today a new law firm, Murphy & McGonigle, P.C., announced that it has opened for business in New York, Washington, D.C. and Richmond, Virginia. The firm represents public companies and their officers and directors as well as financial services companies in high-stakes litigation and governmental investigations and enforcement proceedings.
The firm's SEC Enforcement Group, based in Washington, D.C., boasts a depth of experience unique for a firm of its size. Six of Murphy & McGonigle's partners served in the SEC's Division of Enforcement, some in senior management positions, including a former Associate Director, an Assistant Director and three Branch Chiefs. The Group has represented numerous Fortune 500 companies, their officers and directors and auditors in SEC investigations, enforcement proceedings and white-collar criminal prosecutions. In the financial services industry, the Group represents banks, securities broker/dealers, investment advisors, hedge funds, mortgage companies, credit card companies and their employees in investigations initiated by the SEC, self-regulatory organizations and state Attorneys General.
"The core of this Group has been working together since our days at the SEC and we believe this new law firm model offers us the chance to deliver the very highest quality service available anywhere in a truly collegial, team-oriented environment," said Thomas J. McGonigle, co-founder of Murphy & McGonigle.
The firm's Litigation Group has a national practice defending public companies in some of the highest stakes cases brought in recent years, involving market timing, auction rate securities, "bank sweep" programs, securities fraud, Sarbanes-Oxley claims and mortgage securitization transactions. Lawyers in the Group currently serve as lead counsel for top U.S. banks in major litigation pending in the Southern District of New York as well as the New York state courts.
Both the Enforcement and Litigation Groups will be supported by a state-of-the-art Litigation Support Group in Virginia that provides a broad menu of services from cost-effective solutions for electronic discovery and data management to high-level consulting on data environment strategies. The Group delivers efficiencies to our clients by leveraging cutting edge technology with highly skilled contract attorneys and paraprofessionals in a low overhead environment in Virginia.
"We believe we have brought together an All-Star team of legal talent to work together in a streamlined organization where the focus is strictly on serving our clients. We have chosen a law firm model that rigorously controls the overhead environment, outsourcing non-core functions, while investing in the best available technology to deliver the very best client service available anywhere. We have certainly benefited from the opportunity to draw up this law firm model from scratch," said James A. Murphy, co-founder and Chairman of the firm.
Murphy said the firm intends to grow, particularly in the New York and Washington, D.C. markets, "but we will approach growth carefully. We will be looking for talented lawyers who share our values, particularly an unwavering commitment to clients, and who are attracted by a leaner, less bureaucratic, more team-oriented environment than one typically finds in large law firms."
Murphy added, "We have been very gratified by our clients' enthusiastic reaction to this new law firm model. As a boutique law firm, we don't take anything for granted, most particularly the loyalty of our clients. We understand that we must earn our clients' trust and confidence every day. And that is exactly what we intend to do."
