New Online Certification Program Cultivates City-University Relations
First Program Of Its Kind Now Accepting Students
CLEMSON, S.C., March 28, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Registration is now open for the first and only certification program in the U.S. focusing on city and university relations.
The International Town and Gown Association (ITGA) is accepting students for the inaugural cohort of its certificate program in town-gown relations. The new, six-week online program seeks to foster positive relationships between a university and the community that surrounds it.
ITGA has designed the program for busy university professionals, city officials and staff, community leaders and students. Modules cover timely topics such as taxation, public safety, city-university partnerships and student leadership.
"Collaborative partnerships and a common understanding are keys to a successful town-gown relationship," said Kim Griffo, ITGA executive director. "This program gives individuals the practical tools they need to benefit their own communities."
Issues such as local budget cuts, off-campus student conduct and campus expansions too often cause strained relations between town and gown. This program seeks to initiate dialogue between campuses and their neighbors to promote a healthy and thriving community.
Sally Kram is director of public and governmental affairs for the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area, a network of 14 D.C.-area colleges and universities. She will teach a module called "Taxation and Payments in Lieu of Taxes."
"I commend ITGA for providing a platform to discuss important issues with the ultimate goal of creating community value for all," Kram said.
The registration deadline for the first cohort is April 9. Modules begin April 17. For more information about the program or ITGA membership, visit www.itgau.org.
