GLENDALE, Calif., Aug. 14, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Dropout rates were high among junior high and high schools in Duarte, Calif. So Andrew Gutierrez—at the age of 88—decided to do something about it.

Gutierrez helped launch a tutoring program designed to serve children and young adults working toward a high school diploma. Today, more than 250 students in the Duarte area receive these tutoring services, and seniors are among the program's top volunteers.
In an interview with MySilverAge.com, Gutierrez said: "It's a sacrifice that you don't mind making because you realize that you are contributing to the welfare of individuals, the welfare of the community and the welfare of our country."
More and more retirees are trading in their relaxation time for the chance to drive change in their communities. In the podcast from MySilverAge, Gutierrez and a philanthropy expert discuss the best way to put a cause into action. Expert tips include:
- Define the mission. Determine the difference the cause or organization will make in the community.
- Connect with others. Network with individuals who are already participating in similar philanthropic activities.
- Consider the financial commitment. Keep important financial and legal factors in mind when setting up a nonprofit organization.
The steps discussed in the podcast teach listeners to make a lasting impact in their local communities and leave a legacy for generations to come. Listen to the podcast at: http://www.mysilverage.com/PRNphilanthropy
