New prostate cancer study: Surgery is a better option than radiation

NEW YORK, Dec. 17, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- A new study says that for men with localized prostate cancer, surgery is the best long term treatment option and a better option than radiation therapy. The study was published in the journal European Urology.

The study was carried out at the Odette Caner Centre, Sunnybrook Research Institute, (University of Toronto, Canada). The researchers performed a meta-analysis of 19 studies which compared the success and survival rates of surgery and radiation therapy.  The study involved about 120,000 men with localized prostate cancer who had either undergone surgery or radiation as a form of treatment. The researchers found that men who were treated with radiation were twice as likely to die from prostate cancer and about 1.5 times more likely to die sooner compared to those treated with surgery.

According to senior author, Dr. Robert Nam, "In the past, studies that have compared the success rates of surgery or radiation have been confusing because of their methods. We have evaluated all the good-quality data comparing surgery and radiotherapy, and the results are pretty conclusive; in general, surgery results in better mortality rates than radiotherapy."

The results show that surgery for the treatment of localized prostate cancer is not only more effective, but is also a better option in regards to the long-term prognosis as men with prostate cancer live longer when treated with surgery.
