Increasingly, the term "green" is becoming the marketing buzz word of choice, and while it generally refers to environmentally-preferable attributes of a product, service or technology, no single, universal definition exists.
"We hope to assist every consumer and decision-maker in better understanding the applications of 'green.' While greenwashing and confusion run rampant in the marketplace, knowledge of meaningful green product attributes and credible third party verifications can empower purchasers to make better choices and enhance user satisfaction," explains Tony Worthan, president of AQS.
"Defining Green Products" explores the myriad uses—and misuses—of the terminology behind green consumerism, which began in the early eighties and gained momentum through the nineties into the present. When widespread concerns arose over global warming and natural resource depletion, "green" went mainstream, ultimately influencing the practices of product manufacturers. Although many products lacked substantiated green traits, they nevertheless purported to be "environmentally friendly," or "healthy," leading to confusion in the marketplace.
Some countries, including the U.S., Canada, and Australia, have addressed these issues by enacting federal laws aimed at regulating the use of green marketing terminology. "Defining Green Products" profiles these legislative acts, along with current green guidelines, including the U.S. Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) Green Guides and Guides for the Use of Environmental Marketing Claims.
