New Research Reveals OTC Probiotic Reduces Cytotoxicity Of Potentially Life-Threatening Bacteria

TREVOSE, Pa., June 20, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Promising new in vitro research shows that Florajen3 – the #1 pharmacist recommended probiotic brand where it is sold – reduces cytotoxicity of Clostridium difficile (C. diff), a potentially life-threatening bacterium. According to the Centers for Disease Control, C. diff was responsible for almost half a million infections and was associated with approximately 29,000 deaths in 2011.

The research was conducted by microbiologists Paul Bina and Dr. Robert Deibel and was presented at the 2017 ASM Microbe Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana on Friday, June 2^nd.

Bina and Deibel evaluated the effect of pH and Florajen3 on toxin production by C. diff NAP-1, a particularly virulent strain, in media with 5 different pH levels before autoclaving, ranging from 7.0 to 5.0. The C. diff plate count and cytotoxicity titer were evaluated to identify the effect of pH as well as the ability of Florajen3 to inhibit toxin production. At neutral pH, C. diff co-incubated with Florajen3 grew to a similar high population level as when grown in pure culture.  However, toxin production by C. diff was reduced by over 90% in the presence of Florajen3.  This is significant because it is the toxin that is the virulence factor for C. diff pathology.
