New Survey Finds Runners Reach For Mouthwash And Duct Tape To Power Through Cuts, Scrapes And Blisters

TARRYTOWN, N.Y., June 5, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Too many passionate runners are going to extreme lengths to meet their goals, with a new survey reporting that nearly one third of them resort to common household products like mouthwash, petroleum jelly and duct tape so they can keep running through cuts, scrapes and blisters. The survey, sponsored by New-Skin^®, found that the majority of respondents (66%) are motivated to run in order to improve their health and well-being. Not surprisingly, nearly 50% (one in two) of runners experience cuts, scrapes and blisters, yet only 34% (one in three) thought that an infection causing other physical problems was an important concern. The survey also found that when runners do experience these problems, they worry the injury will get worse (70%) and that they won't be able to continue performing (66%).

Other survey findings revealed that 20% of respondents are goal-oriented, saying they would like to participate in a 5K or 20K in the near future, or even as far as a half-marathon, full marathon or triathlon.

And running in costumes continues to be a trend, as nearly 4 in 10 runners (37%) admitted to wearing a costume while running at least once, with 15% of them dressing as a superhero.
