New York Law Firm Offers Memorial Scholarship for Autism
For the second year in a row, The Perecman Firm is proud to be offering the Avonte Oquendo Memorial Scholarship for Autism
NEW YORK, Jan. 18, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- New York City law firm The Perecman Firm, P.L.L.C. was touched by the story of Avonte Oquendo, the 14-year-old autistic boy who went missing after wandering away from his school in 2013. Although Avonte's story had a tragic end, The Perecman Firm committed to helping his legacy live on. One way the firm has committed to doing this is by offering a $1,000 scholarship for the Fall 2016 semester.
The Avonte Oquendo Memorial Scholarship for Autism is open to students who have been diagnosed with autism (or a form of autism) or have had a close family member diagnosed with autism, and is either currently enrolled or has been accepted to an accredited university or college.
Last year, The Perecman Firm awarded the scholarship to Peter Despres, one of the 118 applicants. As someone who had been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome in the 1st grade, Peter overcame many challenges to, in his own words, "come out stronger, wiser, and more willing to live than ever before."
The Perecman Firm's hope is that the Avonte Oquendo Memorial Scholarship for Autism will not just alleviate the financial burden of attending school, but also perpetuate the memory of Avonte Oquendo in support of the autistic community.
Applicants have until 11:59 ET on July 31, 2016 to apply.
