EVANSTON, Ill., Oct. 4, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Industrial employment in New York declined 1% over the past twelve months according to the 2012 New York Manufacturers Register®, an industrial directory published annually by Manufacturers' News, Inc. (MNI) Evanston, IL. MNI reports New York lost 6,852 industrial jobs between August 2010 and August 2011, an improvement compared to the 2.5% drop recorded by MNI over the 2009-2010 survey period, and the 5.9% lost between August 2008 and August 2009.
Manufacturers' News reports New York is now home to 17,098 manufacturers employing 735,731 workers.
"The recovery is gaining momentum in New York and across the U.S.," says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912. "The state's educated workforce and investments in innovative technologies, as well as its access to capital have been a draw for a variety of enterprises."
Bright spots for the state included Norampac's announcement that it will construct a new "green" packaging plant in Niagara Falls; the expansions of dairy products maker Agro Farma in Columbus, Irving Tissue in Fort Edward, and wind turbine maker WindTamer in Rochester. Time Releases Sciences, Inc. announced an expansion of their "Magic Eraser" cleaning supplies facility in Buffalo; Germanow-Simon will expand a precision optics plastic injection facility in Rochester; and Great Lakes Cheese expanded their plant in Adams.
Printing and publishing remains New York's top industrial sector by employment, accounting for 120,263 of the state's jobs, down 3.2% over the past twelve months. Second-ranked industrial machinery and equipment saw employment rise by 1% and currently accounts for 78,668 manufacturing jobs. Third-ranked electronics gained 1.8% and currently employs 78,562.
Industrial sectors that lost jobs over the year included furniture/fixtures, down 4.1%; transportation equipment, down 3.9%; lumber/wood, down 3%; and food products, down 1.5%. Gains were seen in rubber/plastics, up 1.2% and instruments/related products, up 1%.
Losses for the state included Hostess' closure of its Jamaica, NY Wonder Bread plant; the closure of Pinnacle Foods' Birds Eye corporate headquarters in Rochester; Quad/Graphics' shuttering of its Depew print manufacturing location; the closure of a New Process Gear location in DeWitt and layoffs at Pfizer's Pearl River plant.
MNI reports the New York Metro Area, including the New York City exurbs, accounts for 396,784 manufacturing jobs, down 1.4% over the past twelve months. The Western region of the state accounts for the second-most industrial jobs with 189,385, virtually unchanged from a year ago. Rochester and Buffalo represent 35% of these jobs with Rochester home to 44,342 workers, down 1.4% over the past year, and Buffalo home to 22,831, down 1.5%. Central New York is home to 100,488 industrial workers, down 2.7%. The Upstate/Adirondack region accounts for 49,074 of the state's jobs, down 1.6% over the past twelve months.
