NiSource Continues Top-Ten Placement in Newsweek's 'Green Rankings'
Senior management, employees remain committed to corporate-wide sustainability efforts, including strong environmental practices
MERRILLVILLE, Ind., Nov. 1, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- NiSource Inc. (NYSE: NI) ranked 10 out of 32 U.S. utilities in Newsweek magazine's "Green Rankings" of the nation's largest corporations.
"Our strong showing among utilities in the green rankings is consistent with our commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship in all aspects of our business," NiSource President & CEO Robert C. Skaggs Jr. noted. "From our policies to our actions every day, this commitment is essential to our long-term aspiration to be America's Premier Regulated Energy Company."
NiSource's "Green Policies" score – an assessment of a company's environmental policies and performance – remains within the top five among utilities and in the top 15 percent among all companies in the ranking. The company also significantly improved its "Reputation" score – based on a poll of CEOs, environmental officers and other green experts – from 37.59 to 51.47.
Newsweek compiled the rankings by assessing each company's environmental impact; policies and strategies; and reputation among peers. The nation's 500 largest companies, as measured by revenue, market capitalization and number of employees, were split into 15 sectors, including utilities.
Sustainability Commitment
On April 16, 2010, NiSource issued its first Sustainability Report, which outlines the company's sustainable business approach, including how it continues to build value through environmental stewardship; customer-focused energy solutions; strong, stable communities; and engaged, aligned and safe teams.
For example, as a charter member of the U.S. Department of Energy's Climate Challenge program, NiSource has reduced carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by more than 34 million equivalent tonnes since 1990.
"As a company, we're proactively addressing environmental issues and look to be a leader among our peers in that respect," Vice President of Environmental, Safety and Sustainability Dale Helmers said. "Our team is focused on creating a culture of sustainability, which includes environmental stewardship, for all employees."
