The awards program is open to doctors of medicine (M.D.) or doctors of osteopathic medicine (D.O.).

Two physician honorees will be selected, one for domestic charity work and one for international charity work. LocumTenens.com will donate $10,000 on behalf of each honoree to the medical mission organization of his or her choice. The awards program received more than 125 nominations last year. Dr. Richard Parker, a plastic surgeon from Austin, Texas, was selected as the domestic honoree for his charitable service. Dr. Richard Westermeyer, an anesthesiologist from Portland, Ore., was selected as the international honoree for his worldwide missions work.
LocumTenens.com supports medical volunteerism by sponsoring charitable trips for its physician clients and associates to travel and serve on medical missions in developing countries like Honduras, where access to quality healthcare services is limited. The company also underwrites and supports the medicalmission.org website, which allows healthcare workers and not-for-profit organizations seeking medical volunteers to connect in order to aid underserved patients around the world.
"The nominations we received for the MedicalMissions.org Physician of the Year awards contest last year painted a vivid picture of the incredible charitable work physicians are doing around the world, and both of our honorees had amazing histories of using their talents to help patients," said R. Shane Jackson, president and chief operating officer of LocumTenens.com. "We look forward to honoring additional physicians this year for their dedication to missions work and serving patients around the world."
