Non-Profit Educates and Encourages New Yorkers to Go Green with 1st Annual Urban Greenwalk Tour of Bleecker Street
NEW YORK, April 16, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- urban greenwalk, a newly-established non-profit launches its first annual greenwalk, a ten-day initiative taking place on the retail corridor of Bleecker Street between Bank and Charles Streets. urban greenwalk will bring together leading West Village retailers to educate New Yorkers on how to live greener lives, uniting the fashion and eco communities. The program will kick off on Friday, April 19th at 10 am, with a green ribbon cutting at Magnolia Bakery, featuring New York Congressman Jerrold Nadler and retail partners.
Exciting installations on green topics will be created in 15 retailers windows, allowing pedestrians to learn about an eco life while shopping and strolling. The Marc Jacobs store is showcasing urban gardening, with information about attracting wildlife such as humming birds and butterflies. The solar energy display in the Jimmy Choo windows explains how a community can readily utilize our sun's energy. Other presentations include recycling plastic bags at Bonpoint, rooftop gardening at Dyptique, composting at Ralph Lauren and more. Other topics covered include community gardening, and alternative transportation. Magnolia Bakery, the most famous cupcake bakery in the city, has created a special Greenwalk Cupcake and 100% of proceeds from Greenwalk Cupcake sales go to urban greenwalk.
On Saturday, April 20th, the party will move to the Christopher Street Pier with the urban greenwalk festival taking place from 3:00 – 7:00pm. The community festival will include demonstrations on how to live eco-consciously, musical performances, and food trucks. Solar One will present the Solar Sandy Project, demonstrating how they brought solar generators to 17 locations affected by the storm. The Hudson River Park Trust will offer catch and release fishing, water quality testing, and watershed monitoring project demonstrations. Trained environmental educators will be on hand to answer questions about the amazing natural resource that is the Hudson River. Additional participating non-profits include Grow NYC, Waterkeeper Alliance, Riverkeeper, The Terramar Project and others.
