Nuclear Power in the US, Market Outlook to 2020, 2011 Update – Capacity, Generation, Regulations, Power Plants, Companies
Summary
The US has a total installed capacity of 1,142,788 MW with nuclear capacity of 100,380 MW as of 2010. The nuclear power contribution was about 20.1% to the total electricity production in 2010. The country currently has 104 operating nuclear reactors which are of Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) and Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) type. The nuclear generation was about 807 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) in 2010. Exelon Generation Company, LLC, Entergy Nuclear, Inc, Tennessee Valley Authority, Dominion Resources, Inc. Duke Energy Corporation and NextEra Energy, Inc are some of the key players in the US's nuclear power industry. Uprate programs were carried out for most of all the nuclear plants in the country over the years. As of February 2010, the US government has announced more than $54 billion of federal loan guarantees for the development of new nuclear power projects. This is about three times more than the previous planned budget of $18 billion. The $8.3 billion loan guarantees is for the construction and operation of Westinghouse's two new AP 1000 reactors in Burke, Georgia.
