"Our regional winners, who are nominated by their nursing peers and selected by a panel of nurse judges, are the epitome of professional excellence," said Eileen Williamson, MSN, RN, senior vice president and chief nurse executive for Nurse.com, the premier healthcare brand of OnCourse Learning. "It's an honor for us to recognize the immense, positive impact these nurses have on their patients, colleagues and organizations."
This year's GEM (Giving Excellence Meaning) Awards regional winners were chosen from among hundreds of nominations.
Winners were honored in the following regions:
The winners, who were honored for Excellence in Clinical Nursing, Excellence in Community Care, Excellence in Education and Mentorship, Excellence in Executive Leadership and Excellence in Management, will now move on to the national phase of the program.
A national GEM winner in each category will be selected by a panel of nurse leaders in a final round of blind judging. National winners will be announced in November.
Deborah Rice-Lang, MN, FNP-BC, a family nurse practitioner at Garrison Medical Clinic in Palmdale, Calif., and a clinical faculty member at the UCLA School of Nursing, called her Excellence in Clinical Nursing award for the West region "the ultimate recognition I have received in my nursing career."
Winning the Excellence in Management award in the Northeast region led Laura Iacono, MSN, CCRN, CNRN, CNML, to reflect on the neurosurgical ICU she manages at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, N.Y.
"This is … an award that tells the story of a team committed to excellence every day with every patient," she said.
In each region, a Rising Star GEM Award also was presented to a nurse with fewer than five years of experience who exhibits strong nursing knowledge, clinical skills and leadership potential.
