BUENA PARK, Calif., Jan. 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Nutrilite Health Institute appointed Dr. Richard J. Johnson, from the University of Colorado School of Medicine, as a member to its Scientific Advisory Board.

Dr. Johnson joins a nine-member board that advises the Nutrilite Health Institute on new and emerging nutrition science and technology, public health issues, product development and strategic direction for NUTRILITE® , the world's #1 selling vitamins and dietary supplements brand* sold exclusively through Amway direct selling businesses.
Dr. Johnson is the Tomas Berl Professor of Medicine and chief of the Division of Renal Diseases and Hypertension, as well as adjunct professor, Division of Endocrinology, at the University of Colorado Denver, Health Sciences.
He received his undergraduate degree in anthropology from the University of Wisconsin, and his medical degree from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. He completed an internal medicine residency, and nephrology and infectious diseases fellowships at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle. He joined the faculty at the University of Washington in 1986, and in 2000 moved to Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, where he was the chief of Nephrology. In 2003 he joined the faculty at the University of Florida as the chief of Nephrology and the J Robert Cade Professor of Medicine. In 2008 he moved to Denver, Colorado.
He is nationally and internationally renowned for his work on mechanisms of renal pathology, diabetes and hypertension. He also has performed extensive research on the role of uric acid and fructose in the epidemic of obesity, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and hypertension.
He has published more than 450 articles, and lectured in more than 30 countries. He received the American Society of Nephrology Young Investigator Award in 1994 and is a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation. He has also written The Sugar Fix (Rodale, 2008).
