LAWRENCE, Mass., April 15, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- NxStage Medical Inc., (NASDAQ: NXTM), a leading manufacturer of innovative home dialysis products, is proud to share current NxStage patient Henning's story of resilience and strength. For Henning, who has spent his life pursuing active and athletic endeavors around the world, more frequent home hemodialysis (HHD) with the NxStage® System One™ proved to be a good personal fit. Henning, a Danish citizen, has regained control of his life thanks to home hemodialysis. Currently he and his wife spend the majority of their time in New Hampshire and travel with the NxStage System One.
"NxStage gives me a lot more freedom to do what I want, when I want, because I'm not tied up to a schedule in center," said Henning. "I've traveled internationally to celebrate two birthday parties and a wedding in the last six months. I'm happy that I am able to continue my life the way I am and be with my family. This would not be possible for me without NxStage."
Henning was born with spinal bifida leaving him with just one kidney, but was determined not to allow these conditions to be hindrances. Henning set out to break barriers and became a semi-professional athlete playing basketball and racing wheelchairs in his youth. In his 20s, he spent time traveling the globe skiing in Colorado, paragliding in Bulgaria and hiking the Pacific Northwest—all while in a wheelchair.
Henning's kidney failed and he began dialysis treatment on his wedding day in November 2012. During in-center treatment in Denmark, he learned that his wife would have to move back to the States and realized he needed another form of treatment to be able to travel to see his family. That's when he discovered NxStage and found that more frequent home hemodialysis with the System One would help him find ways to support his mobile lifestyle.
"Providing our patients with therapy that suits their lifestyle is of the utmost importance to our company," says NxStage President Joe Turk. "Henning is an incredible, adventurous person, and we are proud that NxStage helps him live his life to the fullest each and every day."

About the NxStage System One
The NxStage System One is the first and only truly portable hemodialysis system cleared for home use by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA). Its simplicity and revolutionary size (just over a foot tall) are intended to allow convenient use in patients' homes and give patients the freedom to travel with their therapy. When combined with the NxStage Pureflow SL Dialysis Preparation System, patients are able to further simplify, using ordinary tap water to create dialysis fluid on demand. Unlike conventional hemodialysis systems, the System One requires no special infrastructure to operate. Under the guidance of their physician, patients can use the NxStage System One, with their trained partners, where, how and when it best meets their needs - at home or on vacation and at a medically appropriate treatment frequency. http://www.nxstage.com/.
