Portability of System One allows four riders to travel to Oregon and dialyze during the ride

LAWRENCE, Mass., Sept. 10, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- NxStage Medical, Inc. (NASDAQ: NXTM), a leading manufacturer of innovative dialysis products, is proud to support four kidney failure patients performing home hemodialysis (HHD) treatment with the NxStage® System One™ as they ride in the eighth annual Tour DaVita®. Beginning on September 14 in Oregon, each patient will bike up to 257 miles over the course of three days, raising awareness for kidney disease and dialysis treatment options, including HHD. Thanks to the portability and flexibility of treatment schedules with the NxStage System One, all four patients will dialyze in a recreational vehicle along the route with the support of a care partner.

"Riding in Tour DaVita 2012 and 2013 gave me the confidence to lead an active lifestyle while on dialysis," said Alphonso Jefferson, current NxStage patient and one of the first-ever HHD Tour DaVita patient riders. "It's incredible that other HHD patients want to participate in something amazing like this ride; none of which would be possible without the System One's portability and flexible treatment schedule."

Jefferson's trailblazing efforts as an active member of previous Tour DaVita rides have paved the way for at least four other NxStage System One patients, including Thomas Holmes (third tour), Jan Morrow (second tour), Jacqueline Harris, and Lisa Rodriguez-Linner, to participate in the 2014 ride.

"Supporting our patients and their impressive accomplishments is at the heart of everything we do at NxStage," said Joe Turk, president of NxStage Medical. "It's incredibly inspiring that because of our portable technology HHD patients are able to travel to and participate in this great event. We are proud to be part of their efforts to raise awareness for kidney disease and the proven clinical and lifestyle benefits of home hemodialysis."

Tour DaVita, which receives support from NxStage, is an annual ride that raises awareness of kidney disease and funds for medical missions both in the United States and abroad. All funds are donated to DaVita Village Trust, an organization that aspires to improve community health, wellness and vitality, including chronic kidney disease education, prevention and treatment. Last year's fundraising efforts raised more than $1 million. For more information on Tour DaVita 2014 please visit www.tourdavita.org.

Despite the health benefits that home hemodialysis may provide to those with chronic kidney disease, this form of therapy is not for everyone. The reported benefits of home hemodialysis may not be experienced by all patients. The risks associated with hemodialysis treatments in any environment include, but are not limited to, high blood pressure, fluid overload, low blood pressure, heart-related issues, and vascular access complications. The medical devices used in hemodialysis therapies may add additional risks including air entering the bloodstream and blood loss due to clotting or accidental disconnection of the blood tubing set. Certain risks are unique to the home. Treatments at home are done without the presence of medical personnel and on-site technical support. Patients and their partners must be trained on what to do and how to get medical or technical help if needed.

About the NxStage System One  The NxStage System One is the first and only truly portable hemodialysis system cleared for home use by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA). Its simplicity and revolutionary size (just over a foot tall) are intended to allow convenient use in patients' homes and give patients the freedom to travel with their therapy. When combined with the NxStage PureFlow SL Dialysis Preparation System, patients are able to further simplify, using ordinary tap water to create dialysis fluid. Unlike conventional hemodialysis systems, the System One requires no special infrastructure to operate. Under the guidance of their physician, patients can use the NxStage System One, with their trained partners, where, how and when it best meets their needs - at home or on vacation and at a medically appropriate treatment frequency. http://www.nxstage.com/.
