Brooklyn-born and Queens-manufactured, it's electric will replace NYC's pilot infrastructure with a 700 curbside charger network across all five boroughs

BROOKLYN, N.Y., Sept. 15, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- it's electric, the U.S. leader in curbside electric vehicle (EV) charging, today announced it has been officially selected by the City of New York and its partner the New York Power Authority to build out the city's permanent curbside electric vehicle charging network across all five boroughs. The company will replace the city's current pilot infrastructure and install hundreds of new curbside chargers over the next three years. The chargers designed by it's electric, which is headquartered in Brooklyn, will be manufactured right in Queens by Boyce Technologies — meaning the infrastructure for the city's clean transportation future will be entirely made in New York, making it the epicenter of transportation innovation.

This follows an announcement from the New York City Department of Transportation in early August detailing the city's PlugNYC curbside EV charging expansion from the current 88 Level 2 charging points that are heavily used across the city to 700. The expansion will help support the city's ambitious climate goals by facilitating the transition from fossil fuel-powered vehicles to electric vehicles. The transportation sector is one of the top contributors to greenhouse gas emissions in New York City and part of the Mamdani Administration's vision for curb management is use of the curb to meet a wider range of public needs.

For this major expansion of their highly utilized curbside charging program, NYC DOT is building on their successful partnership with the New York Power Authority, made possible through a contract with their sister agency, the Department of Citywide Administrative Services, to procure the contractors best able to meet their needs for curbside charging infrastructure build out, equipment, and operation.

"New York City is our home, it's where it's electric was born. From Crown Heights to Jackson Heights, our solution was designed for every neighborhood and every block that we love across this city. Just as fire hydrants are on every street, our vision is for EV chargers to become that normal - infrastructure New York's kids simply grow up with," said Nathan King, co-founder and CEO of it's electric. "This is also about much more than EV infrastructure. We firmly believe climate solutions are also economic engines for jobs, domestic manufacturing, and for local businesses. This initiative lets New Yorkers across the city participate in the energy transition, improves air quality in our most densely populated neighborhoods, and positions the city to lead the next generation of climate innovation. Every charger powering electric transportation in cities we work in across North America will be built right here in Queens. That investment won't just improve the health of New Yorkers - it'll improve the health of city-people everywhere."

The buildout is targeted at neighborhoods with high concentrations of TLC and rideshare drivers and limited off-street parking, areas historically overlooked by private charging companies. New York City is home to more than 80,000 rideshare drivers, the majority of whom park on the street rather than in a garage or driveway. That reality has been the biggest obstacle keeping drivers from switching to electric vehicles. it's electric's curbside network removes that barrier by making the switch to EV more accessible and affordable for the drivers who need it most.

The contract also positions curbside charging as core infrastructure behind New York's climate commitments. The city's Green Rides initiative requires that all Uber and Lyft trips licensed by the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) be electric or accessible by 2030, part of a broader push toward an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 under OneNYC, the city's blueprint for climate resilience. it's electric's buildout lays the foundation for a physical infrastructure needed to reach this target.

"The Mamdani administration is taking aggressive action to address the climate crisis and achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. For the transportation sector, our main goal is making it easier and more affordable for New Yorkers to walk, bike, and take transit," said NYC DOT Commissioner Mike Flynn. "But for those who still drive, we need to dramatically accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles. This initiative will make charging more affordable and convenient, helping support the transition from fossil fuel-powered vehicles to electric vehicles and expand charging access to TLC-licensed drivers and residents of low- and moderate-income neighborhoods underserved by private charging options."

"The New York Power Authority welcomes this infrastructure and charger collaboration that will bring curbside charging to more New York City communities and make it easier for drivers to choose EVs," said NYPA President and CEO Justin E. Driscoll. "This shared commitment accelerates the buildout of reliable, accessible charging while reducing transportation-related emissions, advancing our goal of cleaner air for all New Yorkers.

"More accessible charging is critical to helping Uber drivers make the switch to electric," said Josh Gold, Senior Director of Public Policy at Uber. "Rideshare drivers cover significantly more miles than the average motorist, so expanding charging where they actually need it can deliver outsized benefits for air quality while strengthening the city's charging network for everyone. We'll continue working with our partners and the City to help build an all-electric future for New York."

Designing and manufacturing chargers in Queens positions the company as a driver of local economic development, creating not only construction, but manufacturing jobs by keeping the supply chain for the city's clean energy transition firmly inside the five boroughs. The relevance of the green economy resonates deeply going back 2023 when it's electric approached the NYC Economic Development Corporation to build its very first pilot in Sunset Park Brooklyn at the Brooklyn Army Terminal. That pilot, the first of its kind, became known as 'Pilot Zero' for the city's brand new Climate Innovation Pilot Program (now known as Pilots at BAT). it's electric, which chose to build its headquarters at Newlab, continues to expand its workforce, right at home in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

"When it came to choosing a partner for a project of this scale, it's electric was first on a list of one for us — one of the easiest decisions we've made," said Diarmuid Clancy, President of Maverick EV Services. "They are incredibly smart, creative, and genuine experts at what they do. New York State has long been a leader in advancing greener, more sustainable transportation infrastructure, and for both of us, this contract is the culmination of years of work in service of that goal — and we're proud Partners of this initiative."

Engineering and construction services will be provided by Maverick Corporation with the network's backend platform provided by it's electric's long-term partner, SWTCH Energy. The charger's design is an original collaboration between it's electric and Billings Jackson Design, an international industrial design firm that resulted in it's electric's unique hardware; one that eliminates bulky infrastructure to fit EV charging seamlessly into dense urban neighborhoods.

"This announcement shows what's possible when New York City backs local entrepreneurs with big ideas and gives them the opportunity to prove those ideas in the real world," said NYCEDC President and CEO Anthony Shorris. "When it's electric partnered with NYCEDC on its first deployment at Brooklyn Army Terminal, it wasn't just testing a new charging technology, it was helping establish a model for how the City can support climate innovation. Now, that pilot is growing into a citywide network, demonstrating how strategic public support can help early-stage companies scale solutions that create jobs, strengthen key industries, and deliver lasting benefits for New Yorkers."

"Real progress happens when bold ideas are matched by the talent, expertise, and determination to bring them to life," said Lindsay Greene, President and CEO of the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation. "We're proud to support innovative Navy Yard tenants like ItsElectric, whose work is expanding access to clean transportation and advancing a more sustainable future for New York City. The growth of mission-oriented businesses like theirs is a foundational element to building the jobs and careers that will power the future economy, and we look forward to working with their great leadership team to translate those career opportunities into reality for New Yorkers."

Alongside this contract announcement, it's electric revealed it has closed an oversubscribed bridge round to support the company through this fast period of growth. The round led by Halogen Ventures, with participation from Wisdom Ventures, Future Communities, E8 Angels, DiPalo Ventures, Alumni Ventures, and Gaingels, alongside returning investors including Uber, Failup, Gratitude Railroad, and The Partnership Fund for New York City, brings the company's total funding raised to-date to $15 million.

"We are proud to back it's electric and excited to see investment in this critical infrastructure by the Department of Transportation," said Maria Gotsch, President & CEO of the Partnership Fund for New York City. "It's electric is exactly the kind of company we target for investment: it's solving both an infrastructure problem and a civic problem, applying new technology to help future-proof New York City while benefitting every day New Yorkers. This partnership between it's electric and the city will enable more drivers to switch to EVs, keep manufacturing in Queens, and spread the benefits that EVs can bring, from cleaner air to quieter streets."

"The best infrastructure companies solve problems that seem inevitable in hindsight," said Jesse Draper, Halogen Ventures Founding Partner. "Halogen Ventures invested in it's electric early and remains bullish because the team cracked a fundamental challenge others could not, building an elegant and scalable solution to an enormous problem. The it's electric team is one of the greatest teams we've ever worked with, their determination, intellect, drive and organization are unmatched. New York is just the beginning."

"Tiya, Nathan, and it's electric are a model for founders scaling meaningful technology in partnership with cities," said David Belt, Co-founder and Executive Chairman of Newlab. "We've had the privilege of working alongside them every day as they've gone from an idea to prototypes, to their first pilots in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, then expanded to Detroit through the Newlab network. Now, they're moving to citywide deployment in New York. This is a significant moment for it's electric and for New York City, as they scale a sustainable model for curbside charging across the five boroughs."

"This announcement shows what can happen when New York gives homegrown tech companies the opportunity to build, grow and solve real problems," said Julie Samuels, President and CEO of Tech:NYC. "The City's selection of it's electric for this 700-charger network will make EV charging more accessible, create local jobs and move New York toward a cleaner transportation future. We're excited to see this public-private partnership move forward, delivering better infrastructure for New Yorkers and strengthening New York City's position as the best place to build technology that solves big challenges."

Beyond their current cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco, Detroit, D.C. and Boston, it's electric is pursuing additional municipal contracts globally, with every charger built under this expanding footprint to be manufactured in New York City.
