Industry leaders discuss technology solutions to DWD crisis
BATON ROUGE, La., March 26 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- obdEdge, LLC, creators of the leading driving while distracted (DWD) solution cellcontrol, participated on the "Reducing Distracted Driving: Exploring Technological Solutions" panel this week in Las Vegas at the 2010 International Association for the Wireless Telecommunications Industry. The panelists, comprised of U.S. Department of Transportation Administrator Peter Appel, AAA Director of State Relations Justin McNaull, U.S. Representative Blair Thoreson (R-ND), obdEdge and others, discussed solutions to the increasingly common and deadly habit of texting and talking on a cell phone and mobile devices while driving, as well as the technical, economic and legal challenges impeding the adoption of technological solutions in the marketplace.
"It was important for us participate on this panel because we believe that we have a responsibility to ensure distracted driving remains at the forefront of the political discussion and to help raise awareness among consumers of the safe driving technologies, like cellcontrol, that are available to them," said Denver Stutler, representative for obdEdge. "We all share a common goal of finding effective solutions to make our roads safer by preventing driving while distracted."
obdEdge developed cellcontrol with the mission of offering accurate, enforceable and customizable protection to reduce accidents and injuries that result from text messaging, phone calls, emails, web browsing when the vehicle is in motion. cellcontrol is different from other distracted driving solutions because it can be used with cell phones, laptops, handhelds and other mobile devices while driving. cellcontrol use of the vehicle's On-Board Diagnostic port allows it the flexibility to customize protection to meet the needs of government agencies or corporations with large fleets to small businesses and families with teen drivers.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), more than half a million injuries and 6,000 deaths each year are caused by distracted driving. In a recent survey by obdEdge, 72 percent of respondents said texting while driving bans would not alter their use of a cell phone while driving and 60 percent said technology solutions would be the most effective measure to curb distracted driving. In an effort to alert Americans to the seriousness of this problem, Congress has designated April National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
"We share concern with the U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and almost half of the states in the U.S. that distracted driving is a rapidly growing dangerous epidemic," said Donald Powers, managing partner of obdEdge. "We believe the key to achieving the goal of reducing distracted driving on our roads will be a combination of education, legislative action and technology solutions that help drivers focus on the task of driving safely by eliminating their ability to give in to the many tempting distractions at their fingertips."
