(NASDAQ: OCLR), a tier-one provider of optical communications and laser solutions, today announced volume shipments of its MI 5000XM™ 40 Gbps coherent modules. This announcement strengthens Oclaro's high speed optical networking coherent roadmap, which features a full range of component and module solutions designed to enable service providers to deploy highly scalable and flexible future-proof architectures. Oclaro will be previewing its complete transponder portfolio at the upcoming ECOC show in booth #1368 & 1370 on September 19-21, 2011, in Geneva, Switzerland.
Bandwidth-intensive applications such as cloud computing, video, file transfer and online gaming are driving a transformation in the core network. Service providers must cost effectively deliver the increased bandwidth and low latency needed for these new services and they must be capable of provisioning new services quickly and with high resiliency to meet evolving consumer and business needs. To accomplish this, service providers are transitioning to richer mesh network topologies with a photonics core, and adopting digital coherent transponder technology as a single scalable technology for core network applications. Coherent transponders such as Oclaro's MI 5000XM are critical components of these mesh networks because they offer a reliable and cost-effective way of encoding large amounts of data into light-signals needed to flow through the photonics core and then decoding the light signals at the connection end point.

The MI 5000XM delivers leading OSNR performance, low power consumption and high chromatic and polarization mode dispersion tolerance. The transponder is designed to work both in dispersion managed and un-managed solutions and can support distances up to 3000km without optical dispersion compensation. The MI 5000XM, part of the Oclaro high bit rate portfolio, can be used directly on blades already designed for an Oclaro 40 Gbps transponder module, uses an industry standard i2c interface, and provides fully autonomous set-up and control.
