Offers.com Launches Annual Scholarship Contest After Inaugural 2013 Edition

AUSTIN, Texas, March 7, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Offers.com started a new tradition last year by giving away its first $2,500 Savvy Saver Scholarship to a nursing student from Saginaw Valley State University.

"We started our scholarship program to give back to the community and help a student who cared just as much about saving money as we do," said Offers.com CEO Steve Schaffer. "We knew most college students could use some extra cash for school supplies and living expenses, but we never suspected that the scholarship money would land in the hands of such a deserving young lady."

Bridget B., a nursing major from Saginaw Valley State University, was surprised to learn that she had been chosen as the Offers.com Savvy Saver Scholarship winner from among more than 1,000 applicants.

"I didn't believe it at first. I actually have a spring internship coming up that my tuition will not cover," said Bridget. "I was in a pinch and it was in the same week that I got the call from you."

Since graduating from high school, Bridget has held two or three jobs at a time and taken out loans to support herself through college. After working multiple jobs, going to class and applying for scholarships, she normally gets 4-5 hours of sleep a night.

"Scholarships take about a half hour or so (45 minutes for the more demanding ones)," said Bridget. "You do that 20 times and it can take up a lot of time."

Bridget's story has inspired Offers.com to continue the Savvy Saver Scholarship annually for other deserving students around the U.S.

"I can't believe what an amazing response we received from the scholarship last year," said Schaffer. "It's been such a rewarding experience we've decided to repeat the scholarship every year."
