Ohio History Connection Celebrates New Name With Memorial Day Events
Sites across Ohio will celebrate Ohio's rich history and the Ohio Historical Society's Transition into the Ohio History Connection.
COLUMBUS, Ohio, May 21, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The new Ohio History Connection will open its summer season to all Ohioans this Memorial Day weekend with an array of historical events for the entire family.
Formerly known as the Ohio Historical Society, the new Ohio History Connection and its local partners will open sites across Ohio. Among the highlights:
Ohio Village Soldiers' Aid Fair.
To pay for Union forces and their supplies, major cities held soldiers' aid fairs during the heart of the Civil War. At the Ohio Village Soldiers' Aid Fair, visitors can hear the 1860s-style 76th Ohio Brass Band, meet Union spy Pauline Cushman, and dress in costume to reenact famous paintings.
McCook House Season Opening Weekend
The McCook House in Carrollton will celebrate its 177th anniversary with a Civil War Recruitment Program conducted by re-enactors. A newly acquired McCook photo album will also be on display.
Spring Knap-In at Flint Ridge Ancient Quarries and Nature Preserve
The Flint Ridge State Memorial Park in Heath will host artisans who will demonstrate how to make arrowheads, stone tools, bows, and items from hide. Families can also hike the same trail Native Americans walked to quarry flint and see a preserved flint pit.
The Buckeye Furnace Historic Site in Wellston shows families how iron-making complexes scattered across rural southern Ohio in the 19th century helped win the Civil War. It features a reconstructed blast furnace, company store, museum and nature trails.
