Ohio's Unique Hybrid Public-Private Institution Expands Online Graduate Programs for Working Adults and Rural Learners

In collaboration with iDesign, University of Rio Grande launches bold plan to expand online pathways for working and adult learners across Appalachian Ohio

RIO GRANDE, Ohio, Sept. 8, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- University of Rio Grande and Rio Grande Community College announced a partnership with instructional design and online program experience firm iDesign to develop and launch eight new online graduate programs in education and nursing. The initiative is designed to expand access to high-quality, flexible degree pathways for learners in communities where geography, economic circumstance, and the demands of working life have long made traditional higher education difficult to reach.

Appalachian Ohio continues to face longstanding workforce and educational attainment challenges, with many prospective students balancing work, family responsibilities, and the financial realities of pursuing a degree. For learners who cannot commute to campus—or who need to fit coursework around night shifts, caregiving responsibilities, or other obligations—traditional degree programs often remain out of reach, limiting opportunities to advance into new careers.

Building on record enrollment in 2025 and the recent expansion of its health care programs, Rio is launching this new online learning initiative to meet learners where they are. iDesign will provide a comprehensive suite of online program experience services—including instructional design, marketing, enrollment support, student success coaching and clinical placement services—to help Rio attract, enroll and support students from initial interest through program completion.

Program development began in July, with the first online programs launching on January 11, 2027 in Nursing and Education. Additional programs will be phased in over the course of the multi-year agreement, with Rio and iDesign working iteratively to assess outcomes and expand access.

The initiative builds on Rio's broader investments in access and workforce alignment, including its expanding presence in Vinton County and its College Credit Plus program, which helps high school students in the region earn college credit before graduation. The online programs developed through this partnership will extend that commitment further, creating degree pathways that serve students where they are today and strengthening the educational infrastructure of a region that has long deserved more.
