One Doctor's Go Fund Me Campaign Brings Huge Relief for COVID-19 Health Workers
Kylie Jenner Pledges $1 million toward the purchase of PPE for frontline heroes
LOS ANGELES, April 20, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Buoyed by a $1 million donation from entrepreneur Kylie Jenner, noted Los Angles gynecologist Dr. Thais Aliabadi has mobilized a Go Fund Me campaign (along with private donations) to protect front-line medical workers battling COVAD-19 in Los Angeles's hospitals.
Aliabadi, who delivered both Kylie Jenner's and Khloe Kardashian's babies, realized the depth of the problem in early March when it took her 15 minutes to locate a standard surgical mask for an emergency procedure she was performing.
"When I left the hospital, I couldn't sleep that night thinking about all our healthcare workers who were going to be endangered by COVID-19 pandemic," said Aliabadi.
"At that point It was all over the news that hospitals and first responders didn't have enough N95 masks or face shields. And companies were selling them for $7 dollars rather than the usual $1"
A Go Fund Me campaign and Instagram post jumpstarts real change
After explaining her frustration to her husband, he suggested a Go Fund Me campaign, which they immediately setup. She knew she needed to get the word out to raise the money needed to protect the thousands of front-line health care workers in Los Angeles. The next morning, she was able to order 5,000 face shields and that was just the beginning.
After posting about her 100,000-mask challenge on Instagram, she received a call from Kylie's Jenner's business manager the next day. That is when she was told that a million-dollar donation was on the way.
"I made a wish to the Universe to gather protective masks for our brave healthcare workers and today my dream came true. You are my hero. This generous donation will help save many precious lives," Aliabadi wrote in a text to Kylie. "Our world is a better place with you in it."
Jenner responded, "Thank you for all the love and care you put into everything that you do. You're an angel on earth."
Goal: get personal protective equipment to health care workers STAT!
Two of Aliabadi's collogues, Dr. David Josephson and Dr. Shirin Towfigh are currently procuring the masks and shields and contacting every hospital in the Greater Los Angeles Area to assess their needs.
Donations have already begun flowing to many Los Angeles area hospitals, urgent cares and hospices both large and small, including:
