One Hundred Fifty Experienced Mothers Offer Young Moms Sage Advice Just in Time for Mother's Day
TUCSON, Ariz., April 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Associates of Watermark Retirement Communities nationwide recently sat down with more than 150 experienced mothers, aged 70+, and asked for their advice to young moms in 2010.
The responses that flooded in are diverse, sage and to the point. Boiled down by a half century's perspective, the mothers' collective wisdom is simple, timeless and, in some cases, humorous. It speaks to the very essence of what's really important long after kids are grown: Love your children, be with them, and read to them, for example.

"Conducting interviews with these moms was refreshing and uplifting," remarked Deb Slocum, Executive Director of The Fountains at Millbrook, Millbrook, NY, one of 26 Watermark communities.
One resident Slocum interviewed, Alma Corcoran, raised nine children in Poughkeepsie, NY. All nine earned Bachelor degrees or higher. Alma's number one tip for raising a successful, healthy family: A steady routine and consistency.
Corcoran told Slocum her family ate dinner together every night. "That is where the children learned to love each other and to lean on each other," she said. "There was always a lot of love in the home."
What mother wouldn't be proud to look back and say that?
"It's important to honor mothers for their selfless contributions to family and society," Slocum said. "It's also important to recognize the value of mentors in general. I am always amazed at how much wisdom is all around us for the asking."
Jill Hofer, a spokesperson for Watermark Retirement Communities, explained how the Advice for Young Moms project aligns with Watermark's "Express Your Self" initiative.
"We believe that whenever people are given the opportunity to share their personal passions, creativity, integrity or inner child, they make meaningful connections with each other and real communities are formed. So, we do whatever we can do to encourage these kinds of exchanges," Hofer said.
