LONDON, Jan. 23, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- One of the last portraits of Lou Reed goes on sale.
In June last year, British celebrity photographer Julian Hanford captured a definitive portrait of the late Lou Reed, little knowing then that within 4 months the legendary New York rock star would be no longer with us. 'I was looking to capture the real life etched into Reed - a life that was lived to the full - and Lou gave me that look, straight down the lens of my camera. When I saw the shot later, on my laptop, I knew it was going to be quite special.'
Due to an unprecedented response, particularly when it was published, Hanford knew that the portrait had to be released as a limited edition art print to satisfy the interest from die-hard fans contacting him. But rather than merely reproduce the black and white portrait as it was, he felt compelled to create some suitably Warhol-esque pop art colour treated versions of it, which seek to express Reed's complex creative character.
'Some of the comments I've had from people have likened it to the classic Che Guevara photograph used so extensively on posters and tee-shirts over the years, which is high praise indeed! It's fitting that this was possibly the last portrait taken of one of Rock's most original and maverick stars. Lou Reed was an inspiration to a generation of musicians, from Bowie to Brit-pop. I think this work is a lasting tribute to him.' The editions can be seen and purchased at www.loureedart.com.
