Online Auto Insurance: SCOTUS Could Save Same-Sex Drivers $100 Million on Coverage
RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif., June 24, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- A new analysis from OnlineAutoInsurance.com shows that the U.S. Supreme Court could save same-sex drivers more than $100 million on auto insurance coverage over the next 10 years if they rule that statewide bans on same-sex marriage are unconstitutional.
How would the decision affect auto insurance costs?
Typically, insurers price policies differently for single drivers compared with married drivers. The reason is that single drivers tend to get into accidents at higher rates and cost insurers more money, so single drivers typically get charged more. According to Independent Statistical Services, the average liability and collision loss for a young male driver who is single is about a third larger than the average loss for a young male driver who is married.
As a result, premiums for married drivers at some insurers tend to be about 10 percent lower than premiums for single drivers.
Most insurers currently price same-sex couples as married, but only if they're in a civil union, domestic partnership, or same-sex marriage and live in a state that legally recognizes those partnerships. At this point, only 20 states and the District of Columbia do so. That means the 267,103 unmarried same-sex couples in the other 30 states aren't currently able to get the discount.
So OnlineAutoInsurance.com did some math to figure out how much nationwide legalization of same-sex marriage could save those 267,103 couples on auto insurance coverage.
They looked at each of those 30 states' unmarried same-sex populations and found that together they pay approximately $213.06 million on car coverage a year. If the Supreme Court rules bans on same-sex marriage are unconstitutional and half of the 267,103 couples get married and get the subsequent marital discounts on their coverage, that would amount to about $10.59 million dollars in auto insurance savings.
