PALO ALTO, Calif., April 16, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- In response to the COVID-19 crisis, OptionB.Org is releasing a free excerpt of the New York Times bestselling book Option B: Facing Adversity, Building Resilience, and Finding Joy. The excerpt includes a new foreword on resilience during the COVID-19 crisis written by the book's authors, Facebook COO and OptionB.Org founder Sheryl Sandberg and Wharton professor and organizational psychologist Adam Grant, as well as sections on coping with hardship, practicing gratitude, helping others, finding joy, and the power of collective resilience.
"This pandemic and the fear and isolation that come with it are unique and extremely challenging," said Sandberg. "Adam and I wrote this book about how, even in life's most difficult moments, there are opportunities to grow, forge stronger relationships, and cultivate gratitude and even joy. There's a lot of science around how to build resilience, and we believe people need this information now more than ever."
OptionB.Org is an initiative to help people build resilience – and support one another – in the face of adversity. The program offers inspirational materials and expert advice to a community of almost 900,000 people. In addition, OptionB.Org runs private online groups to support people experiencing grief and loss, health issues, and family challenges.
"One of the best ways to build our own resilience is to help others," said Grant. "When people are counting on us, we often find strength we didn't know we had. Taking care of family, friends, or our community doesn't just distract from our own problems—it gives us new insight into how to solve them. It also helps us to feel that we matter, that we make a difference to others."
At optionb.org/resilience, people will find the excerpt from Sandberg and Grant's bestselling book and a range of resources designed to help them build individual and community resilience during this crisis, when we're all experiencing our own version of "option b." These materials include:
- Curated advice for practicing self-care and supporting friends, loved ones, and community members, including frontline workers and small businesses
- A collection of #OptionBThere digital cards designed to acknowledge the range of emotions that people may be feeling right now—from grief, fear, and loneliness to frustration and exhaustion
- A weekly "Ask Me Anything" series with experts on topics related to navigating the COVID-19 crisis, such as managing stress, being a present friend virtually, and coping with loss. Our first AMA, which will feature Sandberg and Grant answering questions about individual and community resilience, will be hosted on Facebook at 5:15 p.m. U.S. Pacific Time on Thursday, April 16, and then archived at optionb.org/resilience
- An original piece with step-by-step recommendations for having supportive conversations with loved ones – and the value of those conversations
