Oracle Donates To Girls Inc.
Grant supports technology programs for underserved girls in Alameda County
OAKLAND, Calif., Oct. 23, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Girls Incorporated of Alameda County (Girls Inc.) announced today that it has received a $20,000 grant from Oracle in support of their technology programs for underserved girls in Alameda County. The announcement comes as Girls Inc. opens the doors of their new headquarters in downtown Oakland. Both the new facility and generous contributions from supporters like Oracle will enable Girls Inc. to reach its goal of increasing the number of girls served in the region by 25 percent by 2014.
"We are proud to support an organization that helps girls achieve their full potential," said Colleen Cassity, Executive Director of Oracle Giving. "When you support helping girls awaken and deepen their interest in STEM topics – science, technology, engineering and math – they develop skills vital for life and work in the twenty-first century. To our way of thinking, that's a great investment."
Oracle's support of Girls Inc. of Alameda County is representative of Oracle's larger commitment to improve the quality of life in the communities in which it does business, advance education and deepen students' interest in computer science and engineering through initiatives and giving centered on STEM education. In FY12, Oracle donated more than $10 million to nonprofit organizations globally and more than $5 million to nonprofit organizations in the Bay Area.
Girls Inc. of Alameda County, founded in the Bay Area more than 55 years ago, is a local affiliate of the national Girls Inc. organization, with the shared mission of inspiring girls, ages 5-18, from underserved communities to be strong through healthy living, smart through education, and bold through independence. "We at Girls Inc., understand just how critical it is to promote interest and develop skills in STEM," said Linda Boessenecker, CEO of Girls Inc. of Alameda County. "For girls from underserved racial, ethnic and economic groups, the societal barriers to succeeding in these areas can be especially daunting. With support from Oracle, we'll be better able to meet the increasing needs for this important programming for underserved girls."
