Based on the belief that women have different psychical, emotional and psychological needs to overcome addiction, Orchid was founded to meet the unique needs of women that were not being addressed by the recovery community. Sober living houses are often the next step in the recovery process once a woman leaves a drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility. They are transitional homes where addicts in recovery, especially early on in sobriety, can surround themselves with their peers in a clean and sober environment.

At Orchid's sober living homes, women are supported during their recovery process while given an opportunity to start to rebuild their lives. At the homes, there is mixture of freedom and structure where women are sometimes subject to random drug tests and breathalyzers. Women must abide by rules and regulations, such as attending a minimum number of support group meetings per week, like the various 12-Step programs. The transitional homes also provide an environment where women can build relationships with others in a positive sober community, staying accountable to themselves and one another.

"Being a resident in sober living is very beneficial to women who are leaving rehab and are looking to continue their sobriety in a safe, supportive environment," says Peter A. Harrigan, CEO of the Orchid Recovery Center. "Women are able to be surrounded by other women in recovery and can share their victories, triumphs, and set-backs while navigating the sometimes-rocky road to recovery."

The average stay for women in sober transitional housing can range anywhere from one to six months. These houses also have financial benefits for those who are in the process of having to start over after a stay in rehab. Some insurance companies may pay a part or all of a woman's rent and there is no worry about securing a security deposit, first and last months' rent, and no credit checks performed. However, residents are supported and required to be working or actively seeking employment in order to support themselves. It's another step for these women towards independence.

These facilities also have staff that have gone through the recovery process themselves or are at least active in the recovery community. They understand what the women are going through emotionally to regain their independence and maintain their sobriety. The ultimate goal of these transitional sober living homes is to provide women with the confidence and the firm foundation to fully reenter their community successfully; seeking out their own ongoing support groups and other needed resources to remain sober and healthy.

The Orchid Model of treatment is unlike any other because of its unique focus on the needs of women suffering from the painful effects of drug addiction, alcoholism and unresolved trauma. Treatment programs are provided by highly trained female staff in an environment designed to be as healing as the treatment itself. Orchid's transitional sober living homes offer another step in the recovery process for all women recovering from alcohol and drug addiction.
