Polysubstance abuse is defined as the consumption of more than one drug (usually three not including caffeine or nicotine) over a defined period, simultaneously or at different times. Often the person does not have a preference to any one specific substance. While typically viewed as multiple illicit drug use, the term can also include alcohol abuse as well as legal and prescription medication used for nonmedical purposes.
A recent study by the National Epidemiological Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions, found that approximately 215 out of a total of 43,093 individuals surveyed in the United States (0.5 percent) met the requirements for polysubstance abuse and dependence. Other studies have shown that polysubstance dependence is on the rise. In addition, research has shown that women are more likely to have polysubstance abuse issues when compared to men, often more frequently abusing legal drugs such as tranquilizers, sedatives, and stimulants.
Polysubstance abuse is often diagnosed with teens and those dealing with mental illness or other medical conditions. Women can develop polysubstance addiction as a means of coping with medical or mental health issues, and can be a form of self-medication that quickly spirals into an even worse physical and psychological condition.
