Organizations Throughout Florida Honor Fallen Law Enforcement During National Police Week
GAINESVILLE, Fla., May 14, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- National Police Week started yesterday and runs through May 19. The week, which was established by Congress in 1962, pays special recognition to officers who have lost their lives protecting others in the line of duty. The event always falls the week of May 15, which is designated as Peace Officers Memorial Day.
The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, the Fraternal Order of Police/Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary, and the Concerns of Police Survivors are the principal organizers of the events with other organizations hosting events to commemorate the occasion throughout the nation.
Thousands of law enforcement officers celebrate the week with events in Washington D.C. with the week beginning with a candlelight vigil sponsored by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.
