FORT ATKINSON, Wis., June 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Every experienced equipment operator has an old stand-by - that one reliable piece of equipment that got you out of a pinch despite it being dinged, dirty and maybe even a little rusty. For Leonard Jensen of Tacoma, Washington, it's his 1964 Case Construction King 530 Backhoe.
Jensen and his trusted piece of equipment worked together for Stillwell Construction in Seattle, Washington. Stillwell replaced the backhoe for a newer version in 1979 and gave it to Jensen for personal use. Shortly thereafter, the company closed its doors.
Despite eighteen years of working as a superintendent and equipment operator, jobs were scarce for members of the Tacoma based 612 Operators Union in the seventies. As a result, Jensen and his Case Construction King 530 Backhoe went out on their own.
For a time, Jensen developed a strong business doing everything from putting in side sewers and waterlines to digging foundations and any general, all purpose backhoe work. "I worked seven days a week doing basically anything to pay the mortgage and keep food on the table for my family," he explained.
After forty years of service with 612 Operators Union, Jensen is retired. He still uses the 1964 backhoe for miscellaneous jobs on his 2 acres of property outside of Tacoma and loans it to friends upon request.
With a lot of hard working hours clocked together, one might suspect Jensen to have a term of endearment for the trusty old machine but instead he says, "I've called it a lot of things over the years, some you may not want to print…"
