Workshops led by Pacific Oaks:
Practitioner to Researcher: Enlarging the Circle, Thursday, April 8
Pacific Oaks College faculty member Dr. Susan Bernheimer will co-present a workshop with Dr. Enid Elliot that explores how early childhood educators can combine their experience as practitioners and researchers to meet the needs of a field defined by complex and consistently changing human relationships. Advocating narrative and story-telling as a powerful vehicle for research in early childhood education, the workshop will lead participants through exercises and discussion enabling them to develop their own research based on practice.
Dr. Bernheimer teaches human development at Pacific Oaks and has published and presented internationally on early childhood education. Dr. Elliot, a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Victoria, B.C., is also a published author who has done extensive research on staff development of infant and toddler caregivers.
Discipline with Respect: Supporting Healthy Self-Regulation, Saturday, April 10
Ruth Anne Hammond, M.A., who leads the Infant-Toddler/Parent Program at the Pacific Oaks Children's School and teaches at Pacific Oaks College, will present a workshop focused on helping children develop the empathy, cooperation and respect that lay the groundwork for authentic self-discipline. The program will include lecture, small and large group sharing and discussion as it explores how adults, through their own behavior and self-regulation, can more effectively guide children.
In addition to her role at Pacific Oaks College and Children's School, Hammond is a specialist in infant/toddler development and care-giving, President of the Board of Directors and a mentor/teacher with Resources for Infant Educarers (RIE), and recently published a book based on her work with RIE.
Pacific Oaks College alumnae and faculty will lead additional workshops throughout the three-day conference. In addition, Dr. Cindy Carter, president of Pacific Oaks College, Dr. Betty Jones, faculty emerita, and Dr. Susan Bernheimer will lead an informal discussion about Pacific Oaks at the Conference's Center for Social Change from 1:30-2:30 p.m. on Friday, April 9.
